The Millennium at Metropolitan Park

A high-end, luxury apartment complex, the Millennium is the latest edition to
Metropolitan Park, Robert A.M. Stern’s 8 building, 16 acre, master-planned urban
village in Pentagon City. The 19 story residential building sits atop an enormous,
58,000 square foot park complete with green space, walking trails, and space for
future concerts and other events.
Working with General Contractor BEK (KBR Construction), E-Landscape installed
the landscape designs created by LSG Landscape Architecture. One of the more
significant aspects of the project was the installation of the expansive “on
structure” courtyard requiring the use of lightweight soil mixes over the parking
garage’s structural slab to minimize weight. In addition to work on the courtyard,
continuous soil panels were installed throughout the site to ensure a healthy
medium for shade tree establishment and to minimize damage to adjacent
sidewalks from root buckling. Piping from the panels was tied into the city storm
system or large sumps to ensure adequate drainage and further optimize growing
conditions.
Finishing touches at the site included the installation of urban tolerant trees
including Elm, Zelkova, Linden and Honeylocust, as well as site furnishings such
as benches and trash receptacles.
